AI + The Science of Reading: Accelerate Learning for Multilingual Students

Digital Promise, in collaboration with the U-GAIN Reading National Leadership Cohort, hosted a panel of experts, practitioners, and students to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and the Science of Reading. The listening session explores affordances and challenges, real-world applications, and resources for educators seeking to advance the adoption of evidence-based, AI-based reading tools to support student literacy in their schools.

Panelists discuss their perspectives and experiences with:
Using shared language for discussing the science of reading, structured literacy, and the use of AI tools in the classroom to support student literacy development
Using AI tools critically and appropriately to support student literacy development, illustrated with real-world examples
Establishing guidelines for introducing AI into classrooms, including common uses of AI by teachers and students, pros/cons of using AI in the classroom, and mistakes to avoid
Implementing ethics, data protection, and privacy protocols

This listening session provides a platform for sharing knowledge and fostering discussions on the use of AI-enabled technology to help students learn to read. The session offers multiple perspectives on effective practices for schools and solicit participant feedback.
